Nourish the Nation

Every kid knows school lunch. The tray, the line, the mystery meat.

But here's what most people don't think about: for some kids, that school lunch is the only real meal they get all day. Not because their families don't care — because nobody ever taught them there's another way. They've never tasted food fresh from a farm. They don't know what real, delicious food is supposed to taste like, because no one ever showed them.

That's not just sad. In a lot of neighborhoods, it's the system. Some people call them food deserts. I'll be real with you — it's food apartheid. Whole communities cut off from fresh, healthy food while the rest of us don't think twice about it.

That's why I started Nourish the Nation.

I go into schools and classrooms and I teach kids how to cook. Real food. Fun food. Food that makes you feel good. Because when a kid learns to cook, everything changes — how they eat, how they feel, how they see what's possible for their life.

I don't do this alone.

I work with a nonprofit called Food with Fam. They're a 100% volunteer crew right here in New York City, and their mission is simple: use food and nutrition to build a healthier NYC.

Every week, they hand out free bags of fresh groceries from local New York farms. They serve chef-prepared fresh meals. They've reached more than 30 neighborhoods, working side by side with NYCHA, local farms and food producers, and everyday New Yorkers who just want to help their neighbors eat better.

That's the kind of work I want to stand next to. Learn more at foodwithfam.org.

Why this matters

Nobody is born knowing how to eat well. It's taught — or it's not. And right now, too many of our kids aren't being taught. They're growing up thinking food comes from a freezer aisle and that's just how it is.

Education changes that. One cooking lesson can change what a kid reaches for for the rest of their life. That's not small. That's everything.

Every purchase helps.

A portion of every Smithwick Provisions purchase goes toward supporting food education — the classroom visits, the cooking demos, the work of getting real food knowledge into the neighborhoods that need it most.

When you pick up a pair of shears or a cookbook, you're not just getting something for your kitchen. You're helping feed the next generation — body and mind.
